Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

National Park · Hawaii National Park, Hawaii

Two active volcanoes - Kilauea and the vast bulk of Mauna Loa - inside one park on the island of Hawaii, where you can watch land being made. Crater Rim Drive and Chain of Craters Road reach lava fields, steam vents, a walk-through lava tube and overlooks onto Kilauea's summit caldera. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an International Biosphere Reserve, and it is also a profoundly sacred place: Kilauea is the home of Pele, and the offerings you see at the crater rim are current practice, not history.

OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, EVERY DAY OF THE YEAR - and being open at night matters here more than almost anywhere, because glow from an active eruption is only visible after dark. Visitor centres keep daytime hours. An entrance fee applies per vehicle and is valid seven days; the America the Beautiful pass is accepted. ⚠ ERUPTIVE ACTIVITY CHANGES ACCESS WITHOUT NOTICE and areas close and reopen at short notice - check the park's alerts page the morning you go, not the week before.
