Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
Bird Sanctuary · Kempton, Pennsylvania
A ridge on the Kittatinny in Berks County where, until 1934, gunners shot migrating hawks by the thousand for sport from the rocks. Rosalie Edge — a New York suffragist with no scientific training and considerable determination — leased the mountain, hired a warden to stop the shooting and opened it to the public, creating the first refuge for birds of prey anywhere in the world. Autumn updrafts along the ridge funnel raptors past the lookouts in numbers that draw counters and watchers from across the country, and the count kept here since 1934 is one of the longest continuous raptor datasets in existence.
