Haymarket Martyrs' Monument
Memorial · Forest Park, Illinois
The 1893 monument in Forest Home Cemetery over the graves of the anarchists executed after the Haymarket affair of 1886, when a bomb thrown at a labour rally in Chicago led to a trial widely regarded since as a miscarriage of justice. May Day is observed around the world because of what happened here. It is a National Historic Landmark — designated, unusually, for its significance to people outside the United States — and Emma Goldman, Lucy Parsons and other radicals chose to be buried around it.
