Headlands International Dark Sky Park

Dark Sky Park · Mackinaw City, Michigan

Headlands International Dark Sky Park lies just outside Mackinaw City on the Straits of Mackinac. It was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2011 and covers about 550 to 600 acres of forest and open ground, with about 2 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline. It is free and open at night (confirm), which is the whole point: on a clear, moonless night you can see the Milky Way, and on rare nights the aurora. The Mackinac Bridge is visible on the horizon, a string of lights against the dark. Star-party events are held at times (confirm). It suits stargazers, photographers, families who want one good night under the stars, and anyone who normally lives under streetlights. It is not a place to see on a cloudy or full-moon night. Dress for cold, bring a red-light flashlight, expect limited facilities after dark, and check the sky forecast and the moon phase before you drive, because a cloudy or bright night wastes the trip.

15675 Headlands Road, Mackinaw City, Michigan, 49701, United States

The park is commonly open at night and during the day, which is unusual for a Michigan park, and access is free (confirm current rules). Parking areas, trails and the shoreline are generally reachable at any hour, though gates, lighting rules and any temporary closures can change. Staffed buildings, the Event Center and star-party programmes run on their own schedule, often evenings in season, and the calendar changes from year to year, so confirm with the park or the local dark sky group before you plan around an event. Restrooms and heated space may be limited or closed late at night, especially in winter. The best viewing time is after astronomical dusk on a clear, moonless night, when the sky is fully dark.
