Heard Museum

Non Profit Museum Of American Indian Art · Phoenix, Arizona

A museum of American Indian art and history in central Phoenix, founded in 1929 by Dwight and Maie Heard, and one of the most respected of its kind in the country. Galleries of Native art from the Southwest and beyond, a large collection of Hopi katsina dolls, contemporary art and a moving exhibition on Indian boarding schools surround shaded courtyards with sculpture. Each March the Heard Guild Indian Fair and Market brings hundreds of Native artists, and the World Championship Hoop Dance Contest is held here in winter. It also has an excellent shop of authenticated Native-made jewellery, pottery and textiles.
