Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument

State Historical Monument · San Simeon, California

Hearst Castle is the grand hilltop estate above San Simeon, built between 1919 and 1947 for the publisher William Randolph Hearst and designed by the architect Julia Morgan. It is a California state park, and the only way to see it is on a guided tour, reached by a shuttle bus up the hill from the visitor centre near Highway 1. The main house, Casa Grande, holds a large collection of European art and furnishings, and the outdoor Neptune Pool and the indoor Roman Pool are the images most people come for. It suits history lovers, architecture fans and anyone driving the central coast who wants one big, polished stop. Be honest about the cost and effort: tours cost money, involve many stairs, run on a set schedule and can sell out, so book ahead. The fog on this stretch can hide the view, and the tour does not show everything. Allow half a day. The Piedras Blancas elephant seal rookery is a short drive north, and Big Sur's Highway 1 begins beyond it.

The visitor centre and tours run daily through most of the year, with the first shuttle in the morning and the last tour departing in the afternoon, but exact times depend on the season and on which tour you book. Evening tours run in some seasons only, usually in late autumn and spring, and the tour list can change, so confirm with the state park or the booking system before you drive. Closures happen on a few major holidays and after storms or road damage on Highway 1 and the hill. The grounds cannot be entered without a tour, and the visitor centre has a museum, a theatre and shop that you can use before or after. Arrive at least 30 minutes before your tour starts to park and find the bus line.
