Heart Mountain Interpretive Center

National Historic Landmark (Heart Mountain Relocation Center) · Powell, Wyoming

The site of the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, where the US government confined about 14,000 Japanese Americans, most of them removed from their homes on the West Coast, between 1942 and 1945 — at its peak the third-largest town in Wyoming. The interpretive centre, opened in 2011 in a building styled on the camp barracks, tells their story through belongings, photographs and survivors' testimony, including the young men of the Fair Play Committee who resisted the draft from behind barbed wire. The hospital chimney and root cellar still stand in the fields beneath Heart Mountain. It is a National Historic Landmark.
