Heart's Content Cable Station
The Terminal Of The 1866 Transatlantic Telegraph Cable That Linked Newfoundland To Ireland Across The Sea Floor And Made The First Lasting Connection Between North America And Europe. A Provincial Historic Site Displaying Equipment In The Old Station Building. Open In Season, Usually Summer, And Small. · Heart's Content, Newfoundland and Labrador
Heart's Content Cable Station is a small provincial historic site in a fishing community on the north side of Conception Bay, on Newfoundland's Baccalieu Trail. In 1866 the transatlantic telegraph cable laid across the sea floor came ashore here from Ireland, and it made the first lasting connection between North America and Europe. The old station building holds displays and equipment that explain how messages were sent and why the place once employed so many people. It is a small museum, not a big attraction, and it suits anyone interested in communications history, engineering or Newfoundland heritage. Children may tire of it quickly. Allow about one hour, a little more if a guide or demonstration is running. It is seasonal, usually open in summer only, so confirm opening dates and any admission charge before you drive. The village is about an hour from St. John's, and fog is common on this coast. It works best as one stop on a day along the bay, together with places like Dildo and Brigus, rather than a trip on its own.

Heart's Content is a seasonal provincial historic site, usually open through the summer months, often from about June to early autumn, with the station closed in winter. Daily hours are commonly a standard daytime block, but they change by year and by staffing, so confirm the opening dates, days of the week and closing time with the provincial historic sites office or the visitor information service before you set out. Do not rely on a sign from a previous year. Shoulder-season visits may need an advance call. Last entry is often well before closing. Outside the season the building is shut, though the harbour and the village are still pleasant to walk through in good weather.
