Heber Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area

State Park · Heber, California

Heber Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is a small off-highway vehicle park in the Imperial Valley, near El Centro and the town of Heber, in the Sonoran Desert close to the Mexican border. It covers about 343 acres - confirm. It is a place of flat desert, sandy ground and packed clay, with a small dune system rather than the huge dunes of the better known Imperial Sand Dunes, which lie farther away. Riders come on dirt bikes and quads for a quick local session. The valley is irrigated farmland, so the park sits among fields, canals and dust. Summer heat often passes 110 F and the park may be closed or limited in summer - confirm. A green or red OHV sticker is required - confirm. There is almost no shade, so it suits riders who plan early starts, bring their own water and treat heat as a real danger. Expect dust, engine noise and no shade, and plan to leave well before the afternoon heat sets in.

California State Parks has generally run Heber Dunes as a day-use riding area from morning until around sunset, with a seasonal calendar that may close the park or limit days in the hottest months - confirm the current season, opening days and last entry time before you tow anything. Desert conditions set your day more than a clock does: from late spring through early autumn the heat can be dangerous by mid-morning, and in winter the best riding is the cool middle of the day. Rain can close the clay surface for days. Staffing is limited, so do not expect services beyond the gate - confirm. Check the State Parks page for closures, fire, flood, heat orders or maintenance, and for any change to the entry fee, before you drive out.
