Heddal Stave Church
Norway'S Largest Stave Church, From The 13th Century, Still A Parish Church · Notodden, Telemark
Heddal stave church, beside the E134 a few kilometres west of Notodden in Telemark, is the largest of Norway's roughly 28 surviving medieval stave churches: a tall, tarred timber church of stacked roofs, small spires and covered outside galleries, usually dated to the 13th century and often said to rise about 26 m. It is a three-aisled church built on wooden staves (tall corner posts and masts), with carved portals of vine scrolls and beasts, and inside it keeps rose-painted decoration and fittings added in the 1600s. Heavily restored in the mid 1800s and again in the 1950s, it is still the working parish church of Heddal, so services, weddings and funerals come before sightseeing. A visitor centre with a small exhibition, cafe and shop stands beside it, and the Heddal bygdetun farm museum is a short walk away. People come for the silhouette, the craftsmanship and the legend of the troll who built it. The honest caveat: this is a superb stop of an hour or two on a Telemark road trip rather than a destination for a whole day, and the dim interior is plainer than the dramatic outside.

Seasonal. The church interior and visitor centre are usually open daily from about late May or June to late August or mid September, roughly 09:00-10:00 to 17:00 or a little later in high summer, with shorter hours at the edges of the season - confirm current dates. Outside the season the interior is normally closed except for services and groups by arrangement; the exterior and churchyard can be seen at any time. Visits pause during services, weddings and funerals, common on summer Saturdays and Sundays. Arrive by car on the E134 (roughly 1.5-2 hours from Oslo) or by long-distance bus towards Notodden - check Entur. Individuals need no booking; groups and guided tours out of season should book ahead.
