Helan Mountain Rock Art

Major National Historical And Cultural Site; Several Thousand Petroglyphs At Helankou In The Helan Mountains, Carved Over Thousands Of Years By Successive Nomadic Peoples · Yinchuan, Ningxia

A dry valley cuts into the Helan range an hour north-west of Yinchuan, and on the rock faces along it are several thousand images pecked into the stone by people who passed this way over a span that may reach back eight or ten thousand years - Xiongnu, Xianbei, Turks, Tanguts, Mongols, one after another, using the same walls. Most rock art anywhere in the world is animals. Here the dominant motif is the human face, hundreds of them, staring out of the stone with an effect that is genuinely unsettling at close range. The most famous is high on a cliff above the streambed: a face ringed with radiating lines that everybody calls the Sun God, and which has become the emblem of Ningxia. Later visitors added their own marks, including graffiti in the extinct Tangut script of the Western Xia. Blue sheep pick their way along the slopes above, apparently unbothered.

Helankou, Helan Mountains, Yinchuan, Yinchuan, Ningxia, China

Open daily, generally around 8:00-18:00 in summer and roughly 8:30-17:00 in winter, with last entry before closing; the ticket normally includes the world rock art museum and the internal shuttle is a small separate charge. GO EARLY OR LATE - raking light is what makes the carvings visible, and in flat midday sun many panels effectively disappear. SECTIONS OF THE VALLEY HAVE CLOSED AFTER FLOOD DAMAGE, so confirm what is open before travelling. There is no shade and no water beyond the entrance area.
