Hemavan and Tarnaby

Two Mountain Villages Sharing A Ski Area, The Southern End Of The Kungsleden Trail, And The Home Valley Of Ingemar Stenmark And Anja Parson · Hemavan, Vasterbotten County

Hemavan and Tarnaby are two small mountain villages about 20 km apart on the E12, the Blue Highway, in the Tarna mountains of southern Lapland near the Norwegian border. Together they run a shared ski area, and Hemavan is the southern end of Kungsleden, the long-distance King's Trail that runs north to Abisko. Tarnaby is famous in Sweden as the home valley of the slalom champions Ingemar Stenmark and Anja Parson, and a small exhibition about them is said to be in the village. In summer the draw is hiking, above all the trek to the Syterskalet valley, and the Naturum at Hemavan explains the mountains. People come for uncrowded family skiing, long spring days on the snow and big empty mountains. The honest caveat: this is a Nordic family ski market, far smaller and quieter than Are, with modest nightlife and few restaurants, and it is very remote - many hours from any city unless the small airport has flights that season.

The ski area usually opens from about late November or December to late April or early May, with the longest days and most visitors in March and April; lifts run daily in season, often with shorter hours early and late - check the current lift schedule. Summer lifts may run for hikers in July and August - confirm. The Naturum at Hemavan is usually open daily in summer and on reduced days in winter, and the mountain garden is summer only - confirm both. Getting there: Hemavan has a small airport with flights from Stockholm in some seasons - confirm current routes; otherwise it is a long drive or regional bus up the E12 from Umea, about 5-6 hours. Book cabins for Swedish winter sports weeks (February and March) and Easter months ahead.
