Hemlock Ravine Park

A Quiet Old Growth Hemlock Forest In The City With Trails Along Kearney Lake Brook, The Prince'S Lodge Rotunda Built For A Royal Duke In 1794 And A Hush Unusual For An Urban Park. A Short Forest Walk Close To Halifax · Halifax, Nova Scotia

Hemlock Ravine Park is a small wooded ravine park beside the Bedford Basin on the Bedford Highway in Halifax, about 8 km north-west of downtown (confirm distance). Its tall eastern hemlocks form a dark, cool forest, with some trees reported to be more than two centuries old (confirm), and a brook runs through the ravine beneath them on its way to the harbour. The park is tied to Princes Lodge, the country estate of a royal duke who, in the 1790s, made a home here for himself and his companion, and the round rotunda or music room he built beside the basin still stands as one of the oldest buildings of its kind in the country (confirm). Trails wind along the brook and over small footbridges, and the hush under the evergreens feels far from the busy highway and the city. It is a short walk, best in summer shade or after a snowfall, with no admission and few facilities. Spring melt and storms can make the ground wet (confirm all trails, hours and rules).

Hemlock Ravine Park is an open municipal park, so its trails can be reached at any hour, though the best use is in daylight from May to October when the paths are dry and the forest is green. There is no staffed gate, no ticket office and no regular hours, and the small parking area, the footbridges and the signs are maintained by the municipality on a seasonal basis. Winter use is possible on snow, but ice and fallen branches make the paths slippery after storms. The rotunda and the lodge grounds are outside the main forest and may have their own access rules, so confirm before you go.
