Hemsedal
One Of Scandinavia'S Best Known Alpine Ski Resorts, Often Called The Scandinavian Alps; Hiking And Cycling In Summer · Hemsedal, Buskerud
Hemsedal is a mountain valley at the top of Hallingdal in Buskerud, and home to one of Norway's biggest and best-known alpine ski areas. Its marketing nickname is the Scandinavian Alps, and for a Nordic resort the terrain earns it: steep faces and tree skiing, long family runs, a vertical drop often quoted at around 800 m, and summits near 1,500 m around Totten. Winter is the main event, from roughly late November or early December to late April, with Easter the grand finale, when Norwegian, Swedish and Danish families fill the cabins. The valley also has good cross-country trails, and in summer it turns into a hiking, waterfall and mountain-biking base under the peak of Skogshorn. It is about three hours by road from Oslo. The honest caveats: it is expensive even by Norwegian standards in peak weeks, the valley is spread out along the road rather than a pretty village square, most lodging is self-catering, and winter days in December and January are short and cold.
