Hendy Woods State Park
State Park · Philo, California
Hendy Woods State Park lies in the Anderson Valley of Mendocino County, near Philo on Highway 128, about 15 miles from the coast. Two groves of old-growth coast redwoods, Big Hendy and Little Hendy, stand on the flat floor of the valley beside the Navarro River, with a campground and rentable cabins - confirm counts and booking rules. The park is the former home of the Hendy Hermit, who lived in hollowed redwoods. Because the park sits inland, summers are warm to hot while the groves stay cool and shaded, and fog creeps up the valley from the sea at night. Dozens of Pinot Noir and sparkling wine producers are close by. It is a calm, small-scale redwood park, good as a base for a wine trip or a quiet overnight, but it is not a long-hike destination and has no dramatic coastline or peaks. Expect a short, gentle loop, birdsong, banana slugs after rain and a small crowd even in summer. Plan about half a day, book camping early, and bring layers for the evening fog.

Day use runs about 8 AM to sunset, and the campground and cabins run on their own check-in and check-out times, normally booked ahead through the State Parks reservation system - confirm both. A kiosk or pay station collects the day-use fee, and it is around 8 dollars a vehicle; confirm the current amount. Winter storms can close the access road or drop limbs in the groves, and summer fire danger can bring restrictions on stoves and campfires. The river runs low late in summer. There is no cell signal in parts of the valley, so check the State Parks page and local road notices on the day you go.
