Henri Pittier National Park
Venezuela'S Oldest National Park, Established In 1937, Protecting Cloud Forest Across The Coastal Range Between Maracay And The Sea; Regularly Cited Among The Most Bird Diverse Small Protected Areas On Earth, With More Than Five Hundred Recorded Species, And A Genuine Draw For International Birdwatchers · Rancho Grande, Aragua
Henri Pittier has been protecting cloud forest on the coastal range between Maracay and the Caribbean since 1937, making it Venezuela's oldest national park, and the result is one of the most bird-diverse small protected areas anywhere on earth - more than five hundred species recorded within a park that is modest in size compared to the Amazon or the Gran Sabana. The Rancho Grande biological station, on the main road that crosses the park between Maracay and the coast, sits at cloud-forest elevation and is the standard base for birdwatching, with trails leading into forest that is frequently wrapped in mist even at midday. The park draws a genuinely international birding crowd specifically for this density of species, alongside more general hikers and day visitors making the scenic drive over the mountains between Maracay and the beach towns on the other side. The cloud forest itself is the real reason to slow down here rather than simply pass through on the way to the coast.

The park is open through daylight hours with a modest entry fee collected at a ranger checkpoint on the main road. The Rancho Grande biological station keeps its own access arrangement for visitors and researchers; confirm current opening and any lodging availability before planning a stay there specifically. The road through the park connects Maracay to coastal towns including Choroni and Cuyagua, and is used by through traffic as well as park visitors, so it remains open outside any park-specific hours. Birding is best at dawn, well before the general daytime visitor traffic builds.
