Hereford Inlet Lighthouse
National Register Of Historic Places · North Wildwood, New Jersey
A lighthouse that looks nothing like a lighthouse — an 1874 Carpenter Gothic house in North Wildwood with a light in a tower rising out of the roof, all gables and scrollwork and painted timber, built to a design more usually found in a Victorian seaside villa. IT IS STILL AN ACTIVE AID TO NAVIGATION. Around it is a celebrated COTTAGE GARDEN, laid out in the 1980s and now one of the best small gardens on the Jersey Shore, and the whole thing sits at the north end of the Wildwoods a few streets from a boardwalk it has nothing in common with.
111 North Central Avenue, North Wildwood, New Jersey, 08260, United States
Modest admission with reductions, run by the City of North Wildwood; no booking needed. SEASONAL AND LIMITED HOURS — full hours in summer, much reduced in spring and autumn, and CLOSED OR WEEKEND-ONLY THROUGH THE WINTER, with the schedule varying year to year, so check before travelling. NOTE THAT THIS IS A HOUSE WITH A LIGHT ON THE ROOF RATHER THAN A CLIMBABLE TOWER: visitors tour furnished rooms reached by short internal stairs, and there is no lantern-gallery climb. THE COTTAGE GARDEN IS FREE and open when the building is not, and is at its best in June and July. A small free car park that fills on summer afternoons, after which surrounding streets are permit-restricted and enforced.
