Herrenchiemsee

UNESCO World Heritage Site: The Palaces Of King Ludwig II Of Bavaria (Inscribed 12 July 2025); His Versailles Copy On An Island, Left Unfinished At His Death In 1886 With Most Of Its Rooms Bare Brick · Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria

Ludwig II bought the Herreninsel in 1873 and began building a copy of Versailles on it, which is the plainest way to describe Herrenchiemsee. It is not a castle on a crag like Neuschwanstein; it is a flat-fronted French palace standing among trees on an island in Bavaria's largest lake, and getting there is part of the visit: train or car to Prien am Chiemsee, a walk or a little tram down to Stock harbour, a lake steamer across, then fifteen to twenty minutes on foot through parkland. Ludwig died in 1886 with roughly twenty rooms finished and the rest raw brick behind a dividing wall, and the tour shows you both. The Hall of Mirrors is longer than the gallery at Versailles it imitates and the Great Staircase is deliberately grander; the king slept here only a handful of nights. In July 2025 it joined Neuschwanstein, Linderhof and Schachen on the UNESCO list, which older guidebooks do not mention. Budget most of a day, and treat the boat and the lake as half the reason to come.

Herreninsel in the Chiemsee, reached by boat from Prien-Stock or Gstadt, Upper Bavaria, Prien am Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany

The palace opens daily all year, guided tours only, on a shorter winter timetable with the last tour well before closing - confirm current times before travelling. Boats from Prien-Stock and Gstadt run year-round but far less often outside the summer months, and the last sailing back from the Herreninsel is early in winter; there is no overnight accommodation on the island, so missing it matters. The gardens, the park paths and the island itself are open and free in daylight. Expect closures around the main winter holidays - confirm.
