High Coast
UNESCO World Heritage Site (2000, Shared With Finland'S Kvarken Since 2006): Where The Land Has Risen Highest After The Last Ice Age, About 286 M, With Skuleskogen National Park And The High Coast Trail · Docksta, Vasternorrland County
The High Coast, Hoga kusten, is a stretch of the Gulf of Bothnia coast between Harnosand and Ornskoldsvik where steep, forested hills rise straight from the sea, cut by deep bays and scattered with islands. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2000 and joined in 2006 by the Kvarken Archipelago in Finland, because it shows post-glacial uplift more clearly than anywhere else. The ice sheet of the last ice age pressed the land down; since it melted, the ground has risen by hundreds of metres and is still rising by several millimetres a year. The highest known former shoreline, at about 286 m, is marked on Skuleberget. People come to hike Skuleskogen National Park and the High Coast Trail, climb Skuleberget, see old fishing villages on Ulvon and Trysunda, and swim from red granite rocks. The honest caveat: it is spread out, services shrink sharply outside summer, the sea is cold, and without a car it takes real planning.

The landscape is always open under the right of public access. The season for visitors runs roughly from Midsummer to mid-August, when cafes, island boats, the Skuleberget lift and guided via ferrata run; many close or cut to weekends in May, September and October, and in winter most tourist services shut - check the current schedule. Naturum Hoga Kusten at the foot of Skuleberget beside the E4 near Docksta is usually open daily in summer with shorter hours in spring and autumn - confirm it is open. Getting there: Norrtag trains on the Botnia line stop at Kramfors, Harnosand and Ornskoldsvik, and SJ runs from Stockholm to Ornskoldsvik in roughly 5-6 hours; local buses are sparse, so a car is realistic. Book cabins and hotels for July months ahead, and guided via ferrata days in advance.
