High Desert Museum
Natural History · Bend, Oregon
A museum on 135 acres of ponderosa pine south of Bend, opened in 1982, which sets out to explain the high desert of the interior Northwest as a single subject - its wildlife, its geology, its Indigenous peoples and its settlement - rather than separating natural history from cultural history. There are live animals in indoor and outdoor habitats, a working 1880s homestead and sawmill, and a raptor programme, and it is one of the better regional museums in the western United States.
59800 Wild, Earth and Fire Trail, Bend, Oregon, 97702, United States
Open daily year round, generally 9 AM to 5 PM with shorter winter hours, closed Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. A moderate admission applies with reductions, and parking is free. Live animal encounters, raptor flight demonstrations and living-history interpreters run on a daily schedule collected at the desk. ⚠ A LARGE PART OF THE MUSEUM IS OUTDOORS on 135 acres of ponderosa pine, and central Oregon weather is extreme in both directions - the winter museum is substantially smaller than the summer one.
