High Point State Park

Viewpoint · Sussex, New Jersey

THE HIGHEST GROUND IN NEW JERSEY, 1,803 feet, at the far northwestern corner of the state where the Kittatinny Ridge runs out toward the New York line. A 220-FOOT GRANITE OBELISK STANDS ON THE SUMMIT — built in 1930 as a war memorial, faced in quartzite quarried on site, and you can climb the 291 steps inside it. FROM THE TOP YOU SEE THREE STATES: the Poconos in Pennsylvania, the Catskills in New York, and the whole ridge running south through New Jersey. The Appalachian Trail crosses the park, and Lake Marcia at 1,570 feet is the highest lake in the state.

1480 Route 23, Sussex, New Jersey, 07461, United States

Open daily year round from dawn to dusk with a MODEST PER-VEHICLE DAY-USE FEE IN SEASON, free or much reduced off season. THE HIGH POINT MONUMENT IS SEASONAL — 291 steps up a narrow internal stair, closed through winter and in high wind, and sometimes separately charged; check the current arrangement. THE SUMMIT ROAD ITSELF CAN CLOSE for snow and ice, so ring the park in winter. Lake Marcia swimming is lifeguarded in summer only. Camping and cabins are reserved through New Jersey State Parks. No potable water on the ridge trails. Black bears are resident and mobile signal is patchy.
