Highland Light

National Register Of Historic Places · Truro, Massachusetts

The oldest lighthouse on Cape Cod, first lit in 1797 on the high clay cliffs at Truro where the outer arm faces the open Atlantic, with the present sixty-six-foot tower dating from 1857. In 1996 the whole structure was jacked up and moved four hundred and fifty feet inland, because the cliff it stood on had eroded to within a hundred feet of the base and was still going. Thoreau stayed with the keeper here and wrote about it in Cape Cod.

There is a height minimum of about 48 inches to climb, strictly applied, and the stair is a narrow spiral with no lift. The car park is small and fills in July and August.
