Hilton Falls Conservation Area

A Woodland Conservation Area With A 10 M Waterfall, A Gorge, The Ruins Of An Old Mill And A Network Of Trails And A Reservoir Lake Popular For Walking And Cross Country Skiing. A Quiet Park On The Escarpment Close To Toronto · Milton, Ontario

Hilton Falls Conservation Area lies on the Niagara Escarpment about 10 km south-west of Milton, a quiet woodland park built around a waterfall of roughly 10 m on a small creek (confirm height). Water drops into a rocky gorge beside the stone ruins of an old mill, and trails lead from the gate through hardwood forest to a lookout, a reservoir lake and a network of loops. The creek is a branch of the Sixteen Mile Creek system, and a dam holds the reservoir that anglers and walkers circle. Conservation Halton runs the property and uses a booking system on busy days (confirm), so plan ahead. The park is quieter than its neighbours, with deep shade in summer, trillium in May and a calm winter of snowshoeing and skiing. The Bruce Trail passes close by. Trails are earth and gravel, with roots and short slopes. Facilities are simple, and bugs can be heavy near the reservoir in early summer. Plan for a half day on the trails.

The conservation area is generally open daily from sunrise to sunset, with longer days in summer and earlier closing in winter, and busy periods may require an advance reservation through Conservation Halton (confirm the rules and the gate times). Trails are open year round when the gate is open, and winter use includes snowshoeing and cross-country skiing on trails groomed after snowfall (confirm). The waterfall runs strongest in March and April and in the weeks after heavy rain. Washrooms may close in winter, and the reservoir shore can be inaccessible when ice forms.
