Hilton Head Island
Island · Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
A twelve-mile sea island south of Beaufort that Charles Fraser started developing in 1956 under rules almost nobody had used before — buildings kept below the tree line, signage suppressed, live oaks protected individually — and which became the template for the American planned resort community. It is deliberately discreet to the point of being hard to navigate, it has sixty-odd miles of bicycle path, and it is where the first self-governed town of freed people in the United States was founded in 1862.
