Hinchinbrook Island

The Largest Island National Park In The World, A Granite And Rainforest Wilderness Off The Queensland Coast Near Cardwell, With The Multi Day Thorsborne Trail The Only Way To See Most Of It And No Permanent Settlement Or Resort On The Island Itself · Cardwell, Queensland

Hinchinbrook Island sits off the Queensland coast near Cardwell, between Townsville and Cairns, the largest island national park in the world, a granite and rainforest wilderness with no permanent settlement, no resort and no shop on it. Mount Bowen's jagged granite peak dominates the skyline, visible from the mainland highway on a clear day. The island is reached only by water taxi from Cardwell or Lucinda, a crossing that runs on tide and weather rather than a fixed timetable. Most visitors come for the Thorsborne Trail, a demanding multi-day coastal walk between Ramsay Bay and George Point, with numbers capped by permit and basic unserviced campsites the only overnight option. Shorter day-trip options exist near Macushla and the Zoe Bay waterfall for visitors not attempting the full trail. Mangrove channels, isolated beaches and wild rainforest surround the island, with saltwater crocodiles present in tidal waters throughout. This is wilderness, not a resort island, rewarding visitors prepared to carry in everything they need and carry every scrap of it back out.

There are no shops, fuel or food service anywhere on the island at any time, and no phone reception once away from the mainland side of the crossing.
