Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

Industrial Heritage · Seattle, Washington

A working lock complex opened in 1917 to connect Puget Sound to Lake Union and Lake Washington, dropping vessels twenty-six feet at sea level and carrying more boat traffic than any other lock in the United States. It is also a public park: a botanical garden on the north bank, a spillway dam, and a fish ladder with an underground viewing room where you watch salmon climb past through glass. The whole site is free and it is one of the best hours in Seattle.

3015 NW 54th Street, Seattle, Washington, 98107, United States

Grounds open daily, generally 7 AM to 9 PM, and free. The visitor centre keeps shorter hours and has run reduced days outside summer. The fish ladder viewing room is open the same hours as the grounds. Everything here is free, including parking, which is unusual for Seattle.
