Historic Cane Hill

A Preserved Nineteenth Century Settlement In Western Washington County, Founded 1827 And Home To Arkansas'S First College, With A Restored 1867 Water Powered Mill And A Group Of Surviving Period Buildings. · Canehill, Arkansas

Cane Hill was founded in 1827, had the first college in Arkansas, and was then almost erased - fought over during the Civil War, bypassed by the railroad, and left as a scatter of buildings in a valley in western Washington County. A preservation organisation has spent years restoring what survived: the 1867 water-powered mill, which turns again, a group of nineteenth-century houses and commercial buildings, the college site and the cemeteries. It is quiet, it is free to walk, and it is the clearest picture in north-west Arkansas of what the region looked like before Fayetteville and Bentonville took everything.

The grounds, the cemeteries and the exterior walking route are open during daylight hours and are free. Building interiors and the restored mill are opened on a limited schedule, typically several days a week in season and by arrangement out of it, and may carry a small charge. Events and mill demonstrations are published in advance. Confirm before travelling - this is a small organisation in a remote valley.
