Historic Centre of Puebla

Patrimonio Mundial / Centro HistóRico · Puebla, Puebla

Puebla was founded in 1531 on empty ground between Mexico City and the Gulf, with no pre-Hispanic town underneath it, and laid out as a flat grid by people who could finally build exactly what they wanted. What they wanted was tile. The city makes Talavera pottery under a protected denomination of origin, and its facades are sheathed in blue, yellow and white for block after block. The UNESCO-listed centre is genuinely walkable: the cathedral with the tallest towers in Mexico, the Biblioteca Palafoxiana of 1646, the oldest public library in the Americas, and inside the church of Santo Domingo the Rosary Chapel of 1690, a room so thoroughly gilded that contemporaries called it the eighth wonder of the world. It costs nothing to enter. Puebla is also where mole poblano and chiles en nogada were born, and it is only two hours by bus from Mexico City, so it works as an overnight or as a base for Cholula. Popocatepetl smokes on the horizon, 45 km west, and is genuinely active.
