Historic Halifax

Historic District · Halifax, North Carolina

A colonial river town on the Roanoke where, on 12 April 1776, the Fourth Provincial Congress of North Carolina adopted the Halifax Resolves - the first official action by any American colony calling for independence from Great Britain, nearly three months before the Declaration. The town never grew; its population today is under two hundred. Several original 18th and early 19th-century buildings survive along the old streets and are interpreted as a state historic site.
