Historic Haymarket, Lincoln

Historic Warehouse District Beside The Railroad (Haymarket Historic District) · Lincoln, Nebraska

The Haymarket is Lincoln's historic warehouse district, a grid of a few blocks on the west edge of downtown beside the railroad yards, roughly between 7th and 9th Streets and O and R Streets. It grew up in the late 1800s and early 1900s around the rail line and a market square where farmers once sold hay and produce, and its brick warehouses, loading docks and the old Burlington railroad depot now hold restaurants, bars, breweries, shops, loft apartments and offices. In recent years it has spread west with the Railyard, an outdoor plaza of bars around a big video screen, and Pinnacle Bank Arena, the city's concert and Husker basketball venue. On summer Saturday mornings a farmers market fills the streets, and on Husker home football Saturdays the district becomes the city's red-shirted pregame crowd, a short walk from Memorial Stadium. On an ordinary weekday it is a pleasant, compact place for lunch or dinner and an hour's stroll, not a sight in itself, so most visitors fold it into a day with the State Capitol and the university museums.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the district's streets are open at all hours and FREE; restaurants open for lunch around 11 am and many stay open late, bars until the early hours; shops keep roughly 10 am to 6 pm; the farmers market runs on Saturday mornings from roughly May to October, from about 8 am to midday. The traps that ruin a day are Husker home game Saturdays and arena event nights, when every table and parking space is taken, and arriving at the market late morning to find stalls packing up. Confirm current times before relying on them.
