Historic Market Square
Covered Market · San Antonio, Texas
Three blocks of downtown San Antonio given over to the largest Mexican market in the United States — thirty-two specialty shops in the enclosed El Mercado and eighty more stalls in the Farmer's Market Plaza, selling Talavera pottery, curios, leather and craft imported directly from Mexico. The El Mercado building is a WPA project of 1938, built for farmers to sell produce off the back of their trucks.
514 West Commerce Street, San Antonio, Texas, 78207, United States
A public market square, free to enter and open daily; individual shops and restaurants set their own hours, so very early and very late leave you with an empty plaza. ⚠ El Mercado is enclosed and air-conditioned; the Farmer's Market Plaza is open-air. Mi Tierra Café y Panadería is open around the clock. Centro de Artes on the square is free. Mariachi at weekends; Cinco de Mayo and Fiesta bring large crowds.
