Historic National Road in Indiana

Historic Route · Cambridge City, Indiana

The Indiana section of the first road built with federal money, authorised in 1806 and pushed west across the state in the 1830s, now signed as US 40 and designated a National Scenic Byway. It runs about 150 miles from Richmond on the Ohio line through Indianapolis to Terre Haute on the Illinois line, and it is lined with the physical residue of two centuries of American road travel — 1830s brick tollhouses and pike towns, 1920s auto courts, diners and neon. The Huddleston Farmhouse at Cambridge City survives as a working interpretation of a National Road inn.

U.S. Route 40 corridor, Cambridge City, Indiana, 47327, United States

A public highway, open at all times year-round with no seasonal closures. Individual attractions along it keep their own hours; the Huddleston Farmhouse and several small-town businesses close on Mondays and reduce over winter.
