Historic Nauvoo

Heritage Village · Nauvoo, Illinois

A restored 1840s town on a bend of the Mississippi that was, briefly, one of the largest cities in Illinois — built from swampland by Latter-day Saints driven out of Missouri, and abandoned within seven years when they were driven west to Utah after Joseph Smith was killed at Carthage. Several dozen homes, shops and workshops have been restored and are staffed by volunteer missionaries, and every part of it is free.

290 North Main Street, Nauvoo, Illinois, 62354, United States

FREE — entry, tours and wagon rides. Visitor centres open daily; demonstrations and the pageant are seasonal. The temple itself is closed to non-members; the grounds are open.
