Historic Route 66 in Illinois
Historic Route · Chicago, Illinois
The first three hundred miles of US Route 66, running from a street sign at Adams and Michigan in downtown Chicago south-west across the prairie to the Mississippi River. Commissioned in 1926 and decommissioned in 1985, the Illinois stretch survives better than most: much of the original alignment is still drivable as frontage road beside Interstate 55, and the diners, giant fibreglass figures and neon of the road's heyday are still standing along it.
East Adams Street at South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois, 60603, United States
A public highway, drivable year-round. Individual stops keep their own hours; many small-town museums and diners are seasonal and reduce or close from November.
