Historic Stagville
Historic Site · Durham, North Carolina
What remains of one of the largest plantation complexes in the American South - roughly thirty thousand acres owned by the Bennehan and Cameron families, and home to almost nine hundred enslaved African Americans by 1860. Unusually, four of the original two-storey timber dwellings built by enslaved craftsmen still stand at Horton Grove, along with a vast hand-built barn. The site interprets the plantation from the perspective of the people who were enslaved on it.
