Hitachi Seaside Park

National Government Park · Hitachinaka, Ibaraki

A large national government park on the Pacific coast of Ibaraki, about two hours north-east of Tokyo, built on former military land and opened in 1991, famous for flower displays planted on a huge scale. Its best-known sight is Miharashi no Oka, a gentle hill covered in millions of blue nemophila, baby blue eyes, which in late April and early May turn the whole hill sky-blue down to the sea. In October the same hill is covered in round bushes of kochia that turn from green to fiery red. Between these, the park grows vast beds of tulips and daffodils in spring, poppies and roses in late spring, zinnias in summer and cosmos in autumn, with woods, dunes and a lake. Long cycling paths loop through it, with bicycles for hire, and the Pleasure Garden has a Ferris wheel and rides. The park hosted the Rock in Japan festival for many years. It is packed during Golden Week. Trains run to Katsuta, then a bus, and the Nakaminato fish market, Oarai's torii on the rocks and Mito's plum garden are nearby.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: the park opens daily except one weekly closing day (usually Tuesday), from about 9:30 am to 5 pm, with shorter hours from November to February and longer hours in summer; in the nemophila and kochia peaks, the park often stays open daily and may open earlier. Last entry is about an hour before closing. It closes over the New Year. Bicycle hire closes earlier. Confirm current times before relying on them.
