Hjorundfjord and the Sunnmore Alps
Steep, Quiet Fjord Below The Sunnmore Alps (Slogen, Saksa), With The Norangsdalen Valley And The Historic Hotel Union Oye · Oye, More og Romsdal
The Hjorundfjord cuts about 35 km south into the Sunnmore Alps, a cluster of sharp peaks that rise almost straight from the water to around 1,500-1,700 m. It is quieter and wilder than its neighbour the Geirangerfjord: no big cruise port, no road along its whole length, only small farms, a few villages such as Saebo, Bjorke, Urke and Oye, and short car ferries that cross it. At its inner end the Norangsfjord arm leads to Oye and the historic Hotel Union Oye of 1891, and from there the Norangsdalen valley runs up between walls of rock to the sunken farm in Lake Lygnstoylvatnet, flooded by a rockslide in 1908. People come for peaks rather than sights: Slogen, Saksa and dozens of other summits, spring ski touring from sea to summit, kayaking under cliffs and a slower fjord stay away from the tour coaches. The honest caveat: services are thin, the hikes are steep and serious, weather closes in fast, and without a car you will struggle to get around.
Hjorundfjord and its side arm the Norangsfjord, with Oye, Saebo and Urke, Orsta and Volda municipalities, Oye, More og Romsdal, Norway
A natural landscape, open all year with no gates or tickets. Short car ferries such as Saebo-Leknes run through the day on a timetable, less often in the evening, on weekends and in winter - check Entur and Fjord1 or the current operator. The road through Norangsdalen between Oye and Hellesylt is narrow and can close in winter and spring for avalanche danger - confirm. Reach the area by car from Alesund (about 1.5-2 hours with ferries) or Orsta-Volda airport. Book hotels and summer kayak or guided trips ahead; most cafes and hotels keep short seasons.
