Hoboken

Heritage District · Hoboken, New Jersey

One square mile on the Hudson facing midtown Manhattan, holding about sixty thousand people in brownstone and brick — one of the densest cities in the United States and among the most walkable. FRANK SINATRA WAS BORN HERE IN 1915, and THE FIRST ORGANISED GAME OF BASEBALL UNDER MODERN RULES WAS PLAYED AT ELYSIAN FIELDS ON THIS GROUND IN 1846, which is a claim other places dispute and Hoboken has the better of. HOBOKEN TERMINAL, a 1907 Beaux-Arts ferry and rail hall with a copper facade and a Tiffany-glass waiting room, is one of the finest surviving transport buildings in America.

Washington Street, Hoboken, New Jersey, 07030, United States

A public city, free to walk at all hours. The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway is open continuously and free, and the Manhattan view is the attraction — come in the last two hours of daylight. Hoboken Terminal is a working station, open around the clock, and its historic waiting room is free to walk into. Washington Street shops generally run late morning to evening with restaurants and bars later. ARRIVE BY PATH, FERRY OR LIGHT RAIL — parking is metered, permit-heavy and genuinely difficult in one square mile holding sixty thousand people. The terminal and PATH are a severe crush at weekday rush hours.
