Hoi An is a small riverside trading port about 30 km south of Da Nang, listed by UNESCO in 1999 and kept almost whole since its days as a hub for Japanese, Chinese and European merchants. Low yellow shophouses, timber merchant homes, assembly halls and temples line narrow lanes beside the Hoai River, and the old town is mostly closed to motorbikes during the day. The Japanese Covered Bridge, the Fujian Assembly Hall and the Tan Ky old house are the classic stops, covered by a ticket booklet. After dark the lantern light, boats on the river and night market bring crowds. It is also famous for custom tailors, cao lau noodles, cooking classes and the nearby An Bang beach. Expect heat, mosquitoes and busy weekends, and an annual flood in October and November that can put streets under water. Dress for heat, carry small notes for stalls, and book tailors and cooking classes ahead in the busy months. Da Nang airport is the usual way in, and the old town is easy to cover on foot in a day.

The lanes are open all day and into the night, with no charge to walk them. Heritage houses, halls and the bridge open roughly from morning to evening and check your ticket booklet at the door. Vehicle limits apply in the old town during set hours, so ask your hotel. Lantern light and the river are best after dusk; the full-moon night is the busiest and the old town may be closed to cars all evening.
