Holbox

ÁRea De ProteccióN De Flora Y Fauna Yum Balam · Holbox, Quintana Roo

Holbox is a sandbar off the northern tip of the Yucatan, separated from the mainland by a lagoon, with no cars: the streets are sand and everything moves by golf cart, bicycle or on foot. It sits inside the Yum Balam protected area, and from roughly June to September the largest known whale shark gathering in the world feeds in the waters off it. Flamingos work the lagoon, bioluminescent plankton lights the shallows on dark summer nights, and the sunsets draw half the island into ankle-deep water at seven. The water is not Caribbean turquoise: it is a shallow Gulf shelf stained by mangrove tannin, often green-brown and cloudy, but warm and nearly free of sargassum. Reach it by a 25-minute ferry from Chiquila, commonly MXN 250-400 return (roughly USD 14-22). The island has become fashionable and expensive, so book ahead for whale shark season, Christmas and Semana Santa, and bring cash from the mainland because ATMs are unreliable.

⚠ THERE ARE NO CARS ON THE ISLAND - leave the vehicle at Chiquilá on the mainland (guarded lots charge daily) and cross by passenger ferry, about 25 minutes, running frequently through the day. Streets are soft sand; golf cart taxis meet the ferry. ⚠ WHALE SHARK TOURS RUN ROUGHLY JUNE TO SEPTEMBER under a permit system - snorkel only, no scuba, no touching, two swimmers in the water at a time - and the boat ride is long and often rough. ⚠ BIOLUMINESCENCE NEEDS A MOONLESS NIGHT AWAY FROM VILLAGE LIGHTS, roughly July to September. ⚠ THE WATER IS A SHALLOW GULF SHELF STAINED BY MANGROVE TANNIN - often green-brown and cloudy, and largely free of sargassum. ⚠ THE SANDBAR EAST TO PUNTA MOSQUITO FLOODS WITH THE TIDE - check before walking out. ⚠ MOSQUITOES AND SANDFLIES ARE SERIOUS, especially at dusk and in the wet season. ⚠ NO HOSPITAL ON THE ISLAND AND ATMs ARE UNRELIABLE - bring cash. ⚠ HOURS AND PRICES NOT VERIFIED FOR THIS FILE.
