Holland Harbor Light
Lighthouse · Holland, Michigan
Holland Harbor Light, known to everyone as Big Red, stands at the channel mouth where Lake Macatawa meets Lake Michigan, beside Holland State Park and Ottawa Beach. The present building dates from 1907, a boxy, gabled structure that was later painted bright red, and it is a US Coast Guard aid to navigation rather than a museum. That shapes the visit: the tower is not usually open to the public, so this is a look-at lighthouse, best seen across the channel from the state park beach or the pier. It suits photographers, sunset watchers and families already heading to the beach, and it is one of the most photographed lights in Michigan. Expect a short stop of an hour or so inside a longer beach day. The beach is very busy on hot summer weekends, the pier can be dangerous in storms when waves wash over it, and winter brings ice and empty sand. The city of Holland and its Dutch heritage are a separate trip a few miles inland, so confirm access rules before you plan around the light itself.
Holland Channel, Holland State Park, Holland, Michigan, 49424, United States
The lighthouse is an exterior sight and can be seen at any hour of daylight and after dark when its light is lit, from the public beach and pier areas of Holland State Park. The tower itself is a working Coast Guard aid to navigation and is not normally open for visits, so there is no set opening time for going inside; confirm with the park or local tourism office if a rare open day is advertised. Holland State Park is typically open daily through the year, with the busiest season from Memorial Day to Labor Day, and some facilities such as restrooms and the concession may close outside summer. Parking needs a Michigan Recreation Passport on the vehicle or a daily fee - confirm current rules. Winter ice and storm waves can close the pier to safe use even when the park gate is open.
