Holland State Park

Michigan State Park · Holland, Michigan

Holland State Park sits on Ottawa Beach, where Lake Macatawa meets Lake Michigan through a short channel, a few miles west of the Dutch city of Holland. It is among the busiest state parks in Michigan, and the reason is plain: a broad sandy lake beach, a second quieter lakeside shore, large campgrounds, and the red Holland Harbor Light, known as Big Red, visible beside the channel. The beach faces west, so sunsets are a big draw, and dune hills rise behind the shore. It suits families, campers and boaters, and it is a poor choice for anyone who wants solitude on a summer weekend. Camping fills far ahead, parking lots overflow, and rip currents near the pier are a real danger. Allow a half day or a full day on the sand, longer if you camp; confirm Recreation Passport rules, lifeguard hours and campsite booking dates before you go. Bring shade, water and patience for the parking lot and the traffic on the access road.

The park is open year-round, with beach and trails reachable in daylight and posted hours usually from early morning into the late evening. The campground has a seasonal core, from spring into autumn, and summer weekends need reservations months in advance. A boat launch on the lake side operates mainly in the warm months, and lifeguard cover, if offered, is seasonal and not all day. Winter brings a quiet, windswept beach, with ice on the pier and few services. Confirm current hours, camp dates, lifeguard schedule and passport rules with the Michigan DNR before you drive, especially on holiday weekends when lots fill by mid morning and gates may close to new cars.
