Holliday Lake State Park

Virginia State Park Around A Civilian Conservation Corps Lake, Surrounded By The 19,000 Acre Appomattox Buckingham State Forest · Appomattox, Virginia

A hundred-and-fifty-acre lake in a bowl of hardwood in Appomattox County, and the thing that defines it is what surrounds it: nineteen thousand acres of the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest on every side, which means there is no development anywhere in sight and no road noise at all. The lake was built in the 1930s as a Civilian Conservation Corps project, and the park that grew round it is small, old-fashioned and pleasantly unambitious - a swimming beach with a bath house, boat rental, a campground, a couple of cabins, and a six-mile trail that loops the whole shoreline through the woods. The forest around it is a working one, managed for timber and open to hunting in season, and that is worth knowing because it changes where you can walk in autumn. The other thing it changes is the sky: with no town within a long drive this is among the darker spots in central Virginia, which the campers work out quickly and nobody advertises.
