Holmegaard Vaerk
Former Holmegaard Glassworks, Now A Museum And Workshop Centre For Danish Glass And Ceramics, With Glassblowers At Work · Fensmark, Region Zealand
Holmegaard Vaerk is the old Holmegaard glassworks at Fensmark, roughly 8 km north of Naestved in south Zealand and about 1 hour 15 minutes by car from Copenhagen, reborn as a museum and workshop centre for Danish glass and ceramics. The works was founded in 1825 on the edge of the Holmegaard bog, whose peat fed the furnaces, and for well over a century it made the bottles, tableware and designer glass that sat in almost every Danish home. Production at Fensmark wound down in the 2000s, and the site reopened as Holmegaard Vaerk in the early 2020s, run by the regional museum. Today you see a large collection of glass and ceramics, much of it displayed as open storage, together with a hot shop where glassblowers work, and studios for other crafts. People come for Danish design, for the glassblowing, and as a rainy-day outing. The honest caveat: it is a specialist museum, glassblowing is not guaranteed at every hour, and without an interest in glass or design a visit can feel short.
