Holy City of the Wichitas

WPA Built Granite Village Inside The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge; Home Of The Prince Of Peace Easter Pageant · Lawton, Oklahoma

A 66-acre village of granite buildings inside the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge about 22 miles north-west of Lawton, built between 1934 and 1936 by Works Progress Administration crews using stone gathered from the mountains, as a permanent set for the Easter passion play that had been staged in the hills since 1926. The Prince of Peace Passion Play still runs at dusk on spring Saturday evenings — the 101st year was staged on 28 March and 4 April 2026 — free to attend and about three hours long, which makes it one of the longest-running passion plays in the United States. The rest of the year the site is open free every day: visitors walk among a walled Jerusalem street, the Lord's Supper building, Calvary's hill, a chapel that holds small weddings and services, and a museum and gift shop. It sits in refuge land, so the same closures for hunts, burns and weather can apply.
