The Holy Cross Mountains are low, rounded ridges in south-central Poland, among the oldest in Europe, worn down over hundreds of millions of years. The highest summit, Lysa Gora, reaches only about 612 m, yet the slopes are covered in dense forest with Gold Fir trees, and on the hillsides lie fields of loose grey boulders called goloborza, left by ancient frost. On the ridge stands the Benedictine abbey of Swiety Krzyz, founded in the Middle Ages and famous for a relic said to be a piece of the True Cross. Pilgrims and school groups come in numbers. The park charges a ticket, and the boulder field is reached by a short marked path. The surrounding Kielce area also has caves and a castle, but those are separate stops. This is a place for walkers and families who like quiet woods and a story, not for anyone seeking dramatic peaks. In winter fog can hide the view completely and the climb is a damp slog, so go in a clear season.

The mountains and forest trails are open all year and are not fenced, so you can walk at any hour, but the park trails are best used in daylight and some paths close during snow, ice or storm damage. The park ticket booths and the visitor centre keep daytime hours, often shorter from autumn to spring, and may be closed on Mondays. The abbey church is open for prayer and tours at set times, with services at fixed hours when visitors may be asked to stay quiet. Walking in the forest and the open slopes is generally free of any gate, though the park may charge for entry on the main routes and to enter the museum and the relic chapel. Parts of the abbey grounds and the museum are CLOSED outside opening hours or on some days. Confirm times and prices close to your date, since they shift by season.
