Holy Name Cathedral
Church · Chicago, Illinois
The seat of the Archdiocese of Chicago, built in 1875 on the site of a church the Great Fire destroyed four years earlier, in Victorian Gothic with a 210-foot spire. Its cornerstone carried bullet holes for decades — the North Side gang leader Hymie Weiss was shot dead on the pavement outside in 1926, and the gunfire that killed him marked the stone.
735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60654, United States
Open daily, free. Closes to visitors during Mass, funerals and diocesan liturgies. Check the Mass schedule before a sightseeing visit.
