Homer and the Homer Spit
City Of Homer; Homer Spit · Homer, Alaska
A town at the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula, where the Sterling Highway ends on the Homer Spit, a narrow gravel bar reaching about 4.5 miles into Kachemak Bay under glacier-covered mountains. The Spit is lined with fishing charters, seafood shacks, galleries, campsites, the busy small-boat harbour and the log-cabin Salty Dawg Saloon, and Homer calls itself the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. Water taxis cross the bay to Kachemak Bay State Park's glacier trails and to the artists' villages of Halibut Cove and Seldovia. Tides here can range more than 20 feet, and bald eagles, sea otters and shorebirds gather along the shore. The Spit is exposed to storms: in November 2024 high surf undercut part of Homer Spit Road, and the state funded emergency repairs, with longer-term erosion work planned for the road.
Homer Spit Road, Homer, Alaska, 99603, United States
The Spit and town are open year-round; charters, water taxis and many shops run mainly from May to September. Check city notices for storm-related road closures.
