Homestead Crater

Hot Spring · Midway, Utah

A 55-foot beehive-shaped limestone dome at Midway in the Heber Valley, hollow inside and filled with clear mineral water held at 90 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit by a thermal spring. A tunnel cut through the rock lets you walk in at water level. It is used for soaking, snorkelling and scuba, and it is billed as the only warm scuba diving destination in the continental United States — which is why divers from landlocked states do their open-water certification inside a rock.

⚠ RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED AND SESSIONS ARE TIMED — this is a small enclosed dome with a limited capacity, not a walk-in hot spring, and it books out well ahead, especially in winter and at weekends. Day use is available without staying at the resort. SOAKING, SNORKELLING AND SCUBA ARE SEPARATE BOOKINGS AT SEPARATE PRICES, typically about $15-$25 for a timed soak and considerably more for diving with equipment hire; a full dive shop operates in the tunnel and open-water certification courses run here. The water is 90-96°F year round, thermal-spring fed. Swimwear is required. ⚠ THE TUNNEL IS WET AND SLIPPERY and the temperature contrast on stepping back outside in winter is severe — bring waterproof footwear, a towel, a full change of clothes and warm outer layers.
