Honolulu Zoo

Zoo · Honolulu, Hawaii

A forty-two-acre zoo in Queen Kapiolani Park at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki, holding over twelve hundred and thirty animals. It is the only zoo in the United States to have been established by grants made by a sovereign monarch, and it is built on part of the three-hundred-acre royal park King Kalakaua set aside. Its African savanna section is the largest part of it, and the whole site is a ten-minute walk from Waikiki beach.

151 Kapahulu Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii, 96815, United States

Open daily, generally from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, with the last entry an hour before closing; closed Christmas Day. A modest admission applies with substantially reduced rates for Hawaii residents. Paid parking is in the adjacent Kapiolani Park lot. ⚠ THE ANIMALS ARE ACTIVE EARLY AND DOZING BY MIDDAY, which in a Honolulu afternoon is the whole difference between a good visit and a tour of sleeping shapes.
